Responsible business conduct

Integrity, compliance with the law and respect for ethical values are the most important principles for Webasto in its interactions with employees and business partners. As a family-owned company with a long-standing tradition, the Webasto corporate culture and values imply respect for human rights and environmental standards. Accordingly, corporate management is aligned with these ethical principles.

Respect for human and environmental rights

As one of the 100 largest automotive suppliers, the Webasto Group makes every effort to respect, protect and promote human rights and environmental standards worldwide within its own operations and among its direct suppliers. As the company regards human rights and environmental protection as fundamental principles, it also works towards obligating its indirect suppliers to comply with them.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948 serves as the basis for our position. We are committed to protecting civil and political rights, such as the right to life, the right to freedom from torture and the right to freedom of expression, as well as economic, social and cultural rights, such as the right to work, education and health – for all people, regardless of  ethnic origin or affiliation, gender, nationality,  language, religion or any other status.

As environmental damage has both direct and indirect negative consequences on the effective fulfillment of all human rights, we recognize the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as a separate human right.

Accordingly, we promote sustainable development and environmental protection to minimize the impact of climate change on deprivation of liberty, insecurity, etc., as well as that of air, soil and water pollution, unsustainable management, waste of natural resources and improper handling of chemicals and waste.

Principles of ethical behavior

International standards supplemented by internal guidelines and governance form the basis for all actions within the Group, guaranteeing compliance with existing legal provisions, monitoring and preparation of upcoming regulations on human and environmental rights.

Standards and regulations include among others:

  • International Bill of Human Rights, consisting of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR)

  • UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work

  • the ILO Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (MNE Declaration) and ILO Standard 169, and

  • Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) as well as

  • German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (SCDDA, LkSG), which came into force in 2023 and obliges Webasto as a globally active automotive supplier to respect the dignity and rights of people affected by the activities of its employees and direct suppliers

  • Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and EU-Taxonomy

  • EU Conflict Mineral Regulation

  • EU Battery Regulation

  • Corporate Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD)

Compliance with human rights

The complexity of the automotive industry's international operations increases the risk of human rights abuses and environmental damage in global, multi-stage supply chains, as well as in the extraction and use of critical raw materials, such as metals, cobalt, and lithium. Based on the above-outlined standards and regulations, particularly the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, the Group takes actions and performs due diligence to safeguard human and environmental rights.  Webasto therefore requires its global suppliers to commit to its standards by signing the Webasto Supplier Code of Conduct, which comprehensively addresses human rights. The Declaration of Principles on the Implementation of Obligations under the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG) and the Social and Environmental Principles Policy define the respective responsibilities. In addition, Webasto runs a comprehensive sustainability program that considers human rights-related content.

Acknowledging responsibilities

The company’s position on human rights is set out in the Declaration of Principles on the Implementation of Obligations under the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG), which also serves as a Group policy. Compliance with applicable requirements is supported by the risk management system established under the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG), which is overseen by the Human Rights Officer. The system identifies potential vulnerabilities, defines measures in response to identified risks or violations, and helps raise awareness of risks related to human rights and environmental standards. The Declaration of Principles complements the Social and Environmental Principles Policy, the Corporate Code of Conduct, and the Supplier Code of Conduct.

Acknowledging responsibilities

Identifying risks

A centrally anchored Human Rights Executive role holds overall responsibility for the operational implementation of all human rights-related legal requirements and relevant customer requirements. This Human Rights Executive role may issue instructions to the relevant functions, e.g., Purchasing, People & Organization, or HSE. In this role as supervisor, the Webasto Human Rights Officer oversees all human rights–related matters – including those extending beyond the scope of the SCDDA.

Identifying risks

Minimizing risks

In the event of violations, appropriate corrective measures are to be initiated without undue delay. Remedial measures and preventive measures based on risk analyses are documented in the annual report to the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA), (the reporting obligation has currently been suspended by the legislator). Regular reviews help ensure the effectiveness of the measures taken, including targeted training of employees and suppliers.

Minimizing risks

Facilitating compliance

Compliance requires that all those involved in the business processes contribute to the observance of external and internal rules. Any violations of laws, internal regulations or other malpractice or abuses must be identified immediately and consistently counteracted.

Facilitating compliance

Communication & regular reporting

The SCDDA Committee, made up of a cross-functional team with representatives from Health Safety & Environment, People & Organization, Legal & Patents, Purchasing and Sustainability, is responsible for implementing the SCDDA and risk management. A Human Rights Officer monitors these activities. Both bodies are anchored in the compliance structure and report to the Management Board on a regular basis.

Communication & regular reporting

Whistleblowing System

The Webasto Whistleblowing System enables employees, external partners, and other third parties to confidentially and anonymously report actual or potential compliance violations or other misconduct related to Webasto. This helps the company identify and address potential issues at an early stage.
